In December 2018, the uprisings in Sudan began to intensify. I happened to be visiting Khartoum for the first time, invited to the wedding of two dear friends, just months after the country’s revolution and just before its descent into civil war. On the brink of a new year, this two week celebration was imbued with love, adornment, and family. We didn’t know it then, but in addition to celebrating marriage, this time in Sudan would be etched in our memories as a relic of what Khartoum once was. As the civil war rages on in present-day Sudan and the humanitarian crisis escalates while most of the world turns away, this collection of photos honors the rich and powerful lineage of feminine power, heritage, communal care, and national pride that characterizes Sudanese culture and represents the keepers who will rebuild it's future.
